{"id":23,"date":"2008-04-20T14:02:47","date_gmt":"2008-04-20T14:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.195.124.246\/~wisecon1\/blog\/?p=23"},"modified":"2008-04-20T14:02:47","modified_gmt":"2008-04-20T14:02:47","slug":"here-comes-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wisecontradictions.com\/blog\/?p=23","title":{"rendered":"Here Comes Everybody (I&#8217;m here too!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirky.com\/ \">Clay Shirky&#8217;s<\/a> latest book, <a href=\"http:\/\/isbn.nu\/978-1594201530 \">Here Comes Everybody:<br \/>\nThe Power of Organizing Without Organizations<\/a>,<br \/>\ndiscusses how light-weight web-based<br \/>\ntechnologies like blogging, twittering and photo sharing sites like<br \/>\nFlickr result in real world actions.&nbsp; Shirky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markle.org\/events\/herecomeseverybody\/recap.php \">talked about the book<br \/>\n<\/a>at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markle.org\/\">Markle<br \/>\nFoundation<\/a> on April 10.&nbsp; I&#8217;m going to highlight<br \/>\na new of Clay&#8217;s examples and then reflect on what I think his ideas<br \/>\nmean for traditional organizations.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Clay cited <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\">Flickr<\/a>, in particular, how the site&#8217;s discussion forums allowed folks to collaborate across time and space to produce documentation on photographic techniques.&nbsp; People need not know one another&#8211;they just need to share an interest and a goal.&nbsp; As he says, &quot;Let&#8217;s make it easy for an individual to make a meaningful contribution with little effort.&quot; This patterns shows up in Linux and Wikipedia.&quot;&nbsp; &nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>In Egypt, activists use <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\">Twitter<\/a> to keep tabs on one another, and watch to make sure that people don&#8217;t go silent.&nbsp; If folks do go silent, the Twitter network establishes where someone is&#8211;which might result in a longer prison stay, but it&#8217;s less likely that the missing person will be abused or killed.&nbsp; Shirky talked about how in less-free societies uses of the technology tend t<a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=456,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/tedbongiovanni.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/04\/20\/s640x480.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"71\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.wisecontradictions.com\/images\/2008\/04\/20\/s640x480.jpeg?resize=100%2C71\" title=\"S640x480\" alt=\"S640x480\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; float: right;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\no be more important.&nbsp; A so called &quot;smart mob&quot; in the west might organize in Central Park for a pillow fight, but in Belarus, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andycarvin.com\/archives\/2006\/05\/belarus_flash_mobs_a.html \">they&#8217;re using technology to organize an seemingly innocuous ice cream social and then generating photographic evidence of just how repressive the Belarus government is<\/a>.&nbsp; What would <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Orwell\">Orwell<\/a> make of this one?&nbsp; Forget, &quot; Big Brother is Watching You!&quot;&nbsp; &nbsp;We&#8217;re watching Big Brother, and we&#8217;re going to post his dirty deeds online for all to see.<\/p>\n<p>Does technology make it possible to organize without an organization?&nbsp; The evidence says yes.&nbsp; One only need to look at groups forming on <a href=\"http:\/\/meetup.com\">Meetup<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ning.com\">Ning<\/a>, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\">Facebook<\/a> to see folks organize online.
