{"id":22,"date":"2008-04-27T06:29:16","date_gmt":"2008-04-27T06:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.195.124.246\/~wisecon1\/blog\/?p=22"},"modified":"2008-04-27T06:29:16","modified_gmt":"2008-04-27T06:29:16","slug":"the-five-phases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wisecontradictions.com\/blog\/?p=22","title":{"rendered":"The Five Phases of Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you thought Facebook was a time-drain before, now <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.facebook.com\/blog.php?post=12811122130\">they&#8217;ve gone and added Chat.<\/a>&nbsp; &nbsp;Their stock price notwithstanding, these clever folks are taking notice of how annoying Facebook&#8217;s become.&nbsp; Between their choice of Billy Joel&#8217;s &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/We_Didn't_Start_the_Fire\">We didn&#8217;t start the fire<\/a>,&quot;&nbsp; for the melody, and replacing it with &quot;we&#8217;re getting sick of facebook,&quot; LLP81&#8217;s video critique is one of the funniest things I&#8217;ve seen online in a while.&nbsp; What are your thoughts on Facebook? <\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"355\"><param value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/3ZzP_69ZTFk&amp;hl=en\" name=\"movie\" \/><param value=\"transparent\" name=\"wmode\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p> Facebook is both oddly addictive and utterly senseless.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/doc\/\">Doc Searles<\/a><br \/>\npresented a thoughtful critique at last year&#8217;s Le Web 3 conference.&nbsp; &nbsp;This<br \/>\nslide presented a gentle criticism of Facebook:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/searls.com\/doc\/presentations\/2007_12_12_leweb3_talk\/source\/slide16.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tedbongiovanni.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/2008\/04\/27\/absurdgardens.jpg?w=625\" title=\"Absurdgardens\" alt=\"Absurdgardens\" class=\"image-full\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; float: right;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here, for your consideration, are the Five Phases of Facebook:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; Giddy infatuation &#8211; &quot;Facebook, I can&#8217;t wait to check you!!!&nbsp; How have I lived without you?&nbsp; You complete me.&quot;<br \/>2<br \/>\n&#8211; Cool enthusiasm &#8211; Facebook, you are the amazing.&nbsp; (Read: I&#8217;m not sure<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re meant for each other, but I will stick with you.)<br \/>3 &#8211; Breakup<br \/>\n&amp; Abject Neglect &#8211; Facebook, you&#8217;re not at all who I thought you<br \/>\nwere.&nbsp; You&#8217;re needy, nagging and more than a little cheezy.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t<br \/>\nwant to compare my friends. I don&#8217;t want to send someone a pixel<br \/>\ndrink.&nbsp; Frankly, I don&#8217;t know what I saw in you.&nbsp; <br \/>4 &#8211; Annoyance &#8211;<br \/>\n&quot;Why do you keep sending me messages?&nbsp; I am changing my privacy<br \/>\nsettings.&nbsp; I am deleting applications.&nbsp; Don&#8217;t bother me.&quot;<br \/>5 &#8211;<br \/>\nAcceptance &#8211; &quot;Well Facebook, at least you got me back in touch with<br \/>\nsome old friends and remind me about birthdays I&#8217;d otherwise forget.<br \/>\n(With apologies to&nbsp; <a title=\"Elisabeth K\u00fcbler-Ross\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elisabeth_K%C3%BCbler-Ross\">Elisabeth K\u00fcbler-Ross<\/a> ) <\/p>\n<p>A big part of Facebook&#8217;s charm can be explained by the notion of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reinforcement\">reinforcement<\/a>.<br \/>\nAlthough most of the communications from Facebook are nonsense (though<br \/>\nI am so glad I know what Star Trek Character I am)&nbsp; we&#8217;ve invested in<br \/>\nour profile pages and there&#8217;s the occasional lost friend who finds us.<br \/>\nI think that blogs are better suited to maintaining one&#8217;s personal<br \/>\nspace on the web&#8211;they&#8217;re open compared to Facebook&#8217;s walled garden and<br \/>\nare more suited to customization.&nbsp; But Facebook&#8217;s scaffolded approach<br \/>\nmakes it easy to establish an online presence.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>big part of Facebook&#8217;s charm can be explained by the notion of reinforcement.
