{"id":11,"date":"2010-05-30T11:00:45","date_gmt":"2010-05-30T11:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.195.124.246\/~wisecon1\/blog\/?p=11"},"modified":"2010-05-30T11:00:45","modified_gmt":"2010-05-30T11:00:45","slug":"the-long-slow-road-to-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wisecontradictions.com\/blog\/?p=11","title":{"rendered":"The Long, Slow Road to Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May is <a href=\"http:\/\/bikemonthnyc.org\/\">bike month<\/a> in New York City. &nbsp;Though I commute every fair weather day with my trusty <a title=\"Brompton Bikes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brompton.co.uk\/page.asp?p=3060\">Brompton SL-2<\/a> &nbsp;with a serious assist from New Jersey Transit, I have been wanting to ride all the way from home to work since moving out here just over four years ago. &nbsp;With the help of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnfeinberg.com\/routes\/montclair_to_nyc_bike_route.html\">John Feinberg&#8217;s excellent cue sheet<\/a>, &nbsp;my GPS-enabled smartphone and some tired legs, I made it from Glen Ridge to Cooper Square in about two hours and forty five minutes. &nbsp;(This sounds more like a marathon personal record dream time to me, than a bike ride, but I digress.) &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n<object width=\"400\" height=\"300\"><param name=\"flashvars\" value=\"offsite=true&amp;lang=en-us&amp;page_show_url=%2Fphotos%2Fteddyb109%2Fsets%2F72157624040936945%2Fshow%2F&amp;page_show_back_url=%2Fphotos%2Fteddyb109%2Fsets%2F72157624040936945%2F&amp;set_id=72157624040936945&amp;jump_to=\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/apps\/slideshow\/show.swf?v=71649\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object>\n<\/p>\n<p>The route primarily traverses residential, &nbsp;industrial areas and the occasional patch of nature. &nbsp;Highlights include the now-defunct <a title=\"Wikipedia: New York and Greenwood Lake Short Rail\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_and_Greenwood_Lake_Railway_(1996)\">New York and Greenwood Lake &nbsp;Short Rail<\/a>, and the <a title=\"NJ Naval Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.njnm.com\/\">New Jersey Naval Museum<\/a>, which is home to the <a title=\"Photo: USS Ling\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/teddyb109\/4651989967\/\">USS Ling, a World War II Submarine<\/a>. &nbsp;I was surprised to see a loon diving for food in Leonia, and to learn that the south side of the GWB is closed to pedestrian traffic. &nbsp;The north side is open, but involves what seemed like an interminable number of stairs after the 2 mile climb through Fort Lee. &nbsp;I don&#8217;t think I was ever so happy to see the Hudson. &nbsp;I thought of hopping on the subway at 181 Street, but savored the decline all the way down the West Side, which was all dressed up for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intrepidmuseum.org\/Fleet-Week-Schedule.aspx\">Fleet Week<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For those contemplating the trip from Glen Ridge, here&#8217;s a link to the <a title=\"Google Spreadsheet -
